Most people know that they should be flossing every day at least once. But it is estimated that a mere 30 percent of Americans floss their teeth every day, and as many as 32 percent say they don’t floss at all, according to an article published in US News & World Report.

In addition to brushing and visiting a family dentist, flossing is an essential part of your oral health care. A toothbrush is simply not effective in removing food particles that are stuck between teeth. Flossing not only removes food that might be stuck but it also helps get rid of plaque that forms between teeth and under the gum line. Flossing also helps in preventing gum disease from developing.

Let’s take a look at what your Chesterfield dentist recommends as far as how to make sure you are flossing your teeth the right way.

Flossing Properly

If you’re one of the many people who are not flossing each day, perhaps it’s because you are unsure of how to do it correctly. There is a technique involved with flossing. Be sure to ask your dentist or hygienist for a demonstration at your next appointment.

Meanwhile, here is a how-to guide for flossing properly:

  • Tear off about 18 inches of floss and wind it around each of your middle fingers.
  • Keep an inch or two of floss available to slide between your teeth.
  • Holding the floss taut, slide it between your teeth as well as at the base of your teeth. Be very gentle about flossing below the gum line.
  • Move to floss to expose a clean section when you move to each tooth.

Types of Dental Floss

Dental floss comes in different flavors as well as waxed and unwaxed. Use whichever you prefer. The type of floss isn’t nearly as important as just simply flossing!

Don’t risk your oral health by skipping this very important step! If you have questions about proper flossing technique, be sure to ask your Chesterfield dentist, Dr. Robert Rahm.
