What Are the Dangers around Root Canal Therapy?

A Man getting a Root Canal in Chesterfield, MO

Many people hold mistaken impressions about dental procedures, but none is more prevalent than the misconceptions surrounding root canal treatments. Widely known just as a ‘root canal,’ even the name is misleading. A root canal describes the part of your inner tooth which connects it to the rest of your body’s circulatory and nervous systems.

So a root canal is actually a thing, and when that area runs into problems, the team at Chesterfield Valley Family Dental will provide root canal treatment that, in the long run, will save a tooth that you may otherwise lose.

Indicators That You May Need Treatment

We understand that many people avoid seeing the dentist, sometimes for years, or until they experience tooth pain or other problems. While we prefer you to visit us regularly, two or three times a year, we often meet patients under less-planned circumstances. Dr. Rahm may recommend root canal treatment if you’re experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Severe tooth pain, centralized in one tooth
  • Gum pain
  • Swelling and redness near the painful tooth
  • A visible fracture or hole in a tooth
  • Sore jaw or general fever

The one thing which all these symptoms point to is an infection deep in your tooth. You will feel the effects most as your tooth infection penetrates your inner tooth, spreading inflammation throughout your tooth roots. Root canal treatment opens your tooth so that Dr. Rahm may gently excise all the infected tissue. Once complete, he will seal your inner tooth against future infection and likely finalize the process by covering your damaged tooth with a dental crown for protection.

The Biggest Danger: Avoiding Necessary Dental Treatment

We emphasize that root canal therapy saves teeth because the very nature of any infection is that they grow. In fact, the need for this procedure comes from a condition that could’ve been more effectively treated when it was small. But if you avoid treatment once our dental team has determined you need it, your prognosis becomes grimmer by the day.

In short, if you avoid necessary root canal treatment, you will lose your tooth and eventually so much more as the infection spreads. Your general health could be endangered if we don't eliminate the infection at its source.
