For most of us, we visit the dentist twice a year for preventative dental care. While you might think you are going for “just a cleaning,” there is much more involved in your visit. For example, we do an oral cancer screening with each exam. We want you to take advantage of your visit, so we encourage you to come with any questions or concerns you might have.

Here are some simple ideas that will help you maximize your time with us and make the most out of your regular visits.

  • Write Down Your Questions and Concerns

It’s easy to forget all of the questions you’ve had about your oral health over the past couple of months while you’re getting your teeth cleaned. Write a checklist or note beforehand of things you want to discuss with us to help you remember. For example, are you experiencing any new pain or sensitivity? Are you regularly experiencing pain in your TMJ?  Let us know what’s going on so we can help!

Over the last several years, you’ve probably heard something about the connection between your oral health and the rest of your body. It simply means that your oral health is a significant part of your overall health and factors into the big picture. This is a major reason why it is important that we know your complete medical history.

One major health condition connecting mouth and body is that of diabetes. Diabetes can have effects that are manifested in the oral cavity. It’s important to alert us with any health changes, no matter how insignificant it may seem to you. Also, inform us of any medication changes. Some illnesses and medications may increase your risk of dental problems and disease. The more we know about your health, the better we can personalize your care.
