BOTOX®

Nearly everyone experiences an occasional headache, but it's usually easy to find relief with over-the-counter pain medications. If you wake up every day with a headache accompanied by pain and soreness in your jaw, neck, or shoulders, however, you may have the teeth grinding habit that we call bruxism.

BOTOX in Chesterfield

Fortunately, many dentists offer therapies like night guards to minimize grinding and clenching that damages your teeth and places added stress on your TMJ or jaw joint. But did you know that BOTOX for headache relief in Chesterfield, MO helps alleviate these symptoms in many cases?

Habitually clenching and grinding your teeth stresses the muscles in your jaw and can become painful. As the pain spreads to other muscles on the sides and top of your head, you develop a toothache. The symptoms of teeth grinding and TMJ pain range from mild to debilitating. But many patients in Chesterfield, MO have discovered the benefits of BOTOX® injections to relieve their TMJ pain and headaches. Given every three months, BOTOX® helps minimize the frequency and severity of these painful symptoms.

Let Us Provide the Headache Relief You Need

You can’t enjoy your best quality of life when you are always in pain. Dr. Robert Rahm and his dental team would be happy to meet with you to explain the benefits of choosing BOTOX® to help relieve TMJ headache pain.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Older woman smiling | dentist Chesterfield MOMany consider cosmetic dentistry to be something only for the very wealthy – like movie stars and other celebrities. The truth is, cosmetic dentistry procedures have become much more affordable and commonplace over the years. Chances are good that someone you know already has improved the appearance of their smile with cosmetic dentistry!

Cosmetic Dental Options in 63005

The cost will, of course, depend on how much work you need done and the type. A single veneer to conceal a troublesome tooth obviously costs less than a complete smile makeover. Some cosmetic options, like dental bonding, are quite affordable and can often be completed in a single day.

We also believe that every dental repair or treatment should be aesthetically pleasing. Crowns, fillings, and other procedures will be done with an eye toward your appearance, and we use modern materials that blend in beautifully with your other teeth.

Schedule a Cosmetic Consultation

If you’d like to review your options, we recommend scheduling a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Rahm. He’ll discuss your goals with you and present the options that can help you reach those goals.

We also are happy to accept financing through CareCredit, a healthcare “credit card” that will allow you to pay for your dentistry over time. CareCredit offers low monthly payments and low-interest and no-interest terms. Please call our Chesterfield dental practice for more information.

Crowns and Bridges

Dental Crown | Chesterfield MODental crowns are an excellent solution for patients who have had a tooth with substantial decay, or a crack, or fracture. Because the dental crown fits over your remaining tooth, it can come off if you're not careful about the foods you or if you are not using proper brushing and flossing techniques. Here's what you should know about caring for dental crowns in Chesterfield, MO.

Avoiding certain hard or sticky foods will help you prolong the life of your crown. Here are some culprits:

  • Popcorn
  • Hard candies
  • Raw vegetable (carrots or celery)
  • Caramel
  • Sticky or gummy candy
  • Gum

It is also not a good idea to chew on ice as it can fracture your crown and your natural teeth.

Home care for dental crowns

Sticking to an excellent home care routine is critical when you have a dental crown. You should be brushing at least twice per day and flossing at least once. When you floss, be careful not to get the floss stuck under your tooth, instead slide it gently along the side of it. Pulling the floss straight up could cause your crown to pop off.

Chesterfield MO Dental Clinic

Regular checkups will also help you maintain not only the health of your crown but also the rest of your smile. Contact our Chesterfield, MO dental clinic to schedule an appointment.

Woman smiling If you are struggling with teeth that are failing or missing, a dental bridge can be an ideal solution for replacing one or multiple adjacent missing teeth. A bridge uses porcelain crowns that will anchor to two healthy teeth on either end and support prosthetic teeth in the middle designed to fill the gap.

Your bridge is a fixed appliance, which means it is permanently placed and customized with high-quality ceramic porcelain that is blended to complete your smile seamlessly. The key to supporting the longevity of your dental bridge in Chesterfield, MO is to keep your anchor teeth healthy and clean with consistent daily brushing and careful flossing.

Dental bridge using dental implants

Your dentist can also use dental implants as anchors for a dental bridge, which allows patients with multiple missing teeth to enjoy the benefits that implants offer such as keeping your jawbone healthy by stimulating it as a natural root would. This also promotes longevity for the bridge.

If you would like to learn more about your options for restoring one or more missing teeth, Dr. Rahm is happy to discuss them with you during a consultation. Contact Chesterfield Valley Dental a call today to arrange a convenient time for your appointment.

Dental crown | dentist Chesterfield MOWe may recommend a tooth crown for a number of reasons. In most cases, crowns are used to protect a tooth that has been damaged or weakened. Some of the most common reasons for this include:

  • Extensive decay
  • Injury
  • Root canal therapy
  • Clenching and grinding

Other uses for dental crowns

Crowns can also be used as part of a system to replace missing teeth. For instance, crowns are often used to hold a bridge in place, and a crown may be used to restore a dental implant.

Crowns may also be used as part of a cosmetic treatment plan. Since the crown fits over the entire tooth, this is a great option for camouflaging a tooth with significant discoloration or an unusual shape.

If Dr. Rahm feels that a crown is the most appropriate treatment, he will review this option with you thoroughly, both pros and cons, and also any other possible options so that you can make an informed decision about your dental health. He will take the time to answer your questions and make sure you are feeling comfortable and confident in your decision.

We carefully consider the impact dentistry will have on your overall smile and appearance, and we will present all of your options as well as our recommendations.

Dental Crowns in 63005

If you need a dental crown procedure on your front teeth, you’ll be thrilled to know that we can place crowns that are virtually indistinguishable from your own natural teeth. These crowns are designed to be durable and long lasting, and they will also blend in beautifully to enhance your smile, not detract from it.

In most cases, our patients report that people can tell there’s an improvement in their appearance, but they can’t tell what exactly it is!

What are crowns made of?

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including metals, porcelain fused to a metal base, and tooth-colored materials like ceramic and zirconia. Crowns that are placed on your back teeth need to be stronger since they will bear the brunt of chewing, and we recommend metal or porcelain fused to metal for these.

If you have a tooth that is damaged, please contact Chesterfield Valley Dental to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Robert Rahm.

If you or a family member participate in sports, the right guard can protect against injuries to your teeth and mouth.

Did you know that roughly 40% of dental emergencies are caused by sports injuries? Investing in a custom guard designed to fit your mouth offers many benefits that a generic guard purchased at a store cannot, such as better protection and a more secure fit.

Mouth Guard for Sleep

  • Excessive wear to your teeth

Dental Implants

Dental implant | Implant dentist Chesterfield MOHow you care for your implant will have a lot to do with which type of restoration it is holding in place.

Single Tooth Implant Care

If your implant is replacing a single tooth, caring for it will be just about as simple as caring for your own teeth. Even though the implant itself won’t develop cavities, it can still build up plaque, which can damage neighboring teeth or irritate your gumline and contribute to periodontal disease. Brushing and flossing the implant with the rest of your teeth will help keep the implant clean and healthy.

Implant and Dental Bridge Care in 63005

If your implant is restored with a dental bridge, you will brush and floss it according to Dr. Rahm’s instructions. You will need to make sure to clean between the gums and the pontic with floss to prevent food from becoming trapped beneath. We are happy to show you techniques for proper bridge care.

Implant Dentures Care

If you are restoring implants with dentures, you will care for them similarly to traditional dentures. Every day, you’ll want to remove them for cleaning with a brush and paste designed for dentures, and then you should soak them overnight. Once you’ve removed the denture, you’ll want to clean around the implant abutments with a single-tuft toothbrush to prevent plaque buildup and keep the gum tissue healthy.

Dr. Rahm will review proper implant care with you, and we are always here in case you have any questions.

If you’re missing a tooth, you have a few different options for replacing it. What makes dental implants so special?

Dental implant | Dentist Chesterfield MO

Dental implants are the closest thing to your own natural teeth. For one thing, unlike other tooth replacement options, which sit above the gumline, a dental implant is surgically placed into the bone structure so that it becomes a permanent part of your body. The titanium post then fuses to the bone through a process called osseointegration. This gives the implant remarkable stability and helps lead to the high success rate of implants.

Dental implants and bone health

With the metal post acting as a replacement tooth root, your body continues to send minerals and nutrients to the jawbone. This helps prevent bone resorption, which takes place when a tooth is lost. Other tooth replacement options don’t prevent bone resorption, which means that over time, the bone will lose density and mass. You are likely to lose more teeth, and the shape of your face may even change. With implants, however, your jawbone will stay healthier.

How dental implants are finished

The dental implant procedure can be be restored with a crown to replace a single tooth or a bridge or dentures to replace multiple teeth. We can even provide a complete denture that sits on four implants (the All-on-4 system), which combines the bone retention and stability of dental implants with the convenience and lower cost of a denture.

When should children start coming to the dentist?

We encourage parents to bring their little ones to their own dental cleanings and checkups so children can see what happens during a routine visit and understand that the dental office is not a scary place. Parents can also lead by example at home by talking with their children about their oral health, and showing them how to keep the "sugar bugs" away with regular brushing and flossing. When it's time for your child to visit us, you can stay by their side if that helps them feel more comfortable and we'll explain everything we're doing throughout the procedure to ensure they feel safe and comfortable.

Only a dentist can determine whether a root canal is necessary. There are, however, certain signs and symptoms that can point toward root canal therapy as an appropriate therapy.

One ofman holding jaw in pain | Dentist Chesterfield MO the most notorious of these is, of course, pain. The pain caused by an infection inside the tooth is obvious and insistent. While pain is common, you can still have a problem that requires root canal therapy and not experience pain.

Signs a root canal is necessary

  • Sensitivity in the tooth
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like lesion on the gums

Sometimes there aren’t any external symptoms, but the problem is identified at a routine visit during x-rays. This is one of the reasons why keeping up with regular examinations is so important. Catching problems early can help you avoid pain.

If you have recently damaged a tooth or you are experiencing any symptoms that might point to an infection, please call our Chesterfield dental office today.

Woman smiling in dental chair | Dentist Chesterfield MOThe root canal procedure has a bad reputation. This is unfortunate because a root canal is actually an excellent way to treat an infection and save a tooth that might otherwise have to be extracted.

Part of the reason why root canals are associated with pain probably has to do with the fact that the infection that causes the need for root canal therapy is often quite painful.

Modern Root Canal Therapy

With modern tools and techniques, root canal therapy is no more painful or complicated than filling a tooth. Dr. Rahm has performed many root canals and has extensive experience and skill. Your comfort is one of our top priorities, and before beginning your procedure, he will always make sure that you are completely numb and comfortable.

After the procedure, once the anesthetic wears off, you may feel some sensitivity and discomfort. This is due to inflammation and can typically be controlled with over-the-counter medications. This sensitivity should subside in a couple of days, and you will feel like yourself again.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening kit With so many teeth whitening products available in grocery and drug stores, each promising stunning results, why should you pay more for a professional product?

There are actually a few good reasons.

Risks of Drug Store Whitening

For one thing, the promised results from these drugstore kits usually never materialize. Over time, you may wind up spending considerably more than you would for a single professional treatment! The products can also be tricky to use, you may have to use them for a long time to get results, and they can cause sensitivity and even damage to your dental enamel.

Benefits of Professional Whitening

Professional products are available in a higher concentration, they give you results quickly (the same day in the case of in-office whitening!), and they contain ingredients that reduce sensitivity. Additionally, since the customized take home trays we offer are made from impressions of your own teeth, they fit perfectly, preventing whitening product from leaking out onto sensitive soft tissues.

Contact Our Chesterfield MO Dental Clinic

Plus, Dr. Rahm will oversee your entire whitening process. He can recommend the type of whitening that is most appropriate for your needs. He can also determine whether your discoloration will respond to whitening and, if not, offer effective alternatives. If you choose take-home whitening and you have any questions, our office is always a phone call or email away, and we are happy to help you out and provide any needed guidance.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Before we start placing a dental filling, we will make sure that you are comfortable. Dr. Rahm will administer anesthetic to numb your tooth (in the case of small cavities, this may not be needed). Once your tooth is numb, Dr. Rahm will remove the damaged portion of the tooth.

Cavity Treatment
man smiling | Dentist Chesterfield MO

The next step is to clean and prepare the area for the filling. When your tooth is ready, the composite filling will be added in layers, with curing in between each layer. Regular suction will help ensure that the area stays dry while we place the filling.

Once the cavity is completely filled, Dr. Rahm will shape and polish it, removing any rough spots and ensuring a virtually seamless blend with your enamel. He will also test your bite to make sure that everything is correct.

Following a filling, you may experience some sensitivity to temperature changes, but this will quickly subside.

Why are dental fillings necessary?

Regular examinations are necessary to catch cavities when they are small and easily treated. In most cases, cavities are painless – until they become large and deep. We would much rather catch your cavities early and prevent you from experiencing any discomfort!

Schedule an Appointment in Chesterfield

If it’s time for a routine dental examination (we usually recommend that you come in every six months), give our Chesterfield dental office a call.

The most obvious advantage of tooth-colored fillings is that they are the same shade as your teeth! This means that once they are placed, they will blend in with the surrounding enamel. Nobody will know that you have a filling; they will only see a great-looking smile. Because the composite material used in fillings looks so natural, it is often used to make small cosmetic repairs, such as filling in chips or covering areas of discoloration.

Improved Bonding With Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillings have other advantages, too. Unlike amalgam (metal) fillings, which require an “anchor” to be created in your tooth, tooth-colored fillings bond directly to the tooth structure. This means that we don’t have to remove as much healthy tooth structure to place the filling. The bond between the composite resin filling and the tooth also restores most of the original strength of the tooth.

Fewer Loose Fillings

Metal fillings, like any other metal, respond to temperature fluctuations by expanding and contracting. Over time, this can cause the filling to become loose. In some cases, it can even cause damage to the tooth. If the filling becomes loose, bacteria can get in and cause damage and decay underneath the filling. Composite fillings help you avoid this problem.

Veneers

Yes and no.

Permanent Veneers | Chesterfield MO DentistPlacing dental veneers involves removing a small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth. This is done so that the veneers will look natural once they are placed. Once enamel is removed, it doesn’t grow back. This means that you will always need to wear veneers. So in this sense, veneers are permanent.

How long will veneers last?

The actual veneers themselves will last about five to ten years. You can extend the length of your veneers by practicing excellent home hygiene, limiting foods and beverages that can stain, and avoid biting down on hard items such as ice. Regular check-ups at Chesterfield Valley Dental are necessary so that we can keep an eye on the condition of your veneers and make sure that they are in great shape.

What happens if a veneer falls out?

If a veneer happens to become dislodged, please let us know right away. We may be able to re-bond it. If the veneer is damaged, however, we will need to replace it. Veneers are an investment in yourself, and taking good care of this investment will help your smile look good for years.

We may recommend veneers if you:

  • Have healthy teeth that are free from decay
  • Are free from gum disease
  • Don’t have any concerns with grinding or clenching your teeth
  • Have proper bite alignment
  • Have a sufficient quantity of healthy tooth enamel

We can use veneers to fix a number of cosmetic flaws, including:

  • Chips or cracks
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth
  • Teeth that are too short
  • Stains and discolorations
  • Mild misalignments

If you have any conditions that might cause us not to recommend veneers, don’t worry. In some cases, treatment of the condition can make veneers an option once again. We can also consider other cosmetic options that can both address the problem and improve the appearance of your smile.
