Questions about Family Dentistry

Chesterfield and St. Louis, Missouri

Is family dentistry really for the entire family?

Yes, family dentistry includes both preventative and treatment based dental procedures for your entire family. At Chesterfield Valley Dental Group, we are experienced in treating everyone from children to adults.

How old should children be when they first see a dentist?

We recommend you start bringing your children in to see us by age four at the latest. The earlier you start to bring your children in, the more comfortable they will be in a dental environment.

Why should baby teeth be taken care of by a dentist?

An annual examination of baby teeth can help us determine if your child’s permanent teeth are coming in appropriately. Additionally, procedures like fluoride treatments and sealing can help prevent painful cavities, even in baby teeth.

How often should my family visit the dentist?

You and your family members should visit us twice a year for examinations and professional cleanings. Proper oral hygiene begins at home, but only a dentist can get your teeth truly clean, as well as check to make sure no potential problems are manifesting in your gums and mouth that cannot be seen by simply looking in a mirror.

What happens during a dental visit?

During your visit, we will thoroughly clean your teeth, removing plaque and buildup that your toothbrush cannot remove on its own. We clean in between teeth, and in harder to reach areas that may have been overlooked or simply cannot be reached by your at-home tools. We will examine your mouth for signs of disease, and once a year we will take x-rays to ensure cavities and other common oral problems are identified and treated.
