The History of Dentistry
Chesterfield and St. Louis, Missouri
Dentistry is the science of preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases in teeth and the mouth. Over the years the practice of dentistry has gone from simple pain relief, to preventative and curative treatments, evolving at the same time into several different braches including neuromuscular dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and general dentistry. At Chesterfield Valley Dental Group, we are pleased to offer a wide range of services within these categories.
In the Beginning
Evidence suggests that dentistry was being used for pain relief as long ago as 7000 BC. Using bow drills to relieve pressure, the Indus Valley Civilization may have invented dentistry. Moving forward, there is evidence suggesting Sumerians began practicing dentistry around 5000 BC, and treatments for various ailments were recorded as early as 1700 BC. The ancient Greeks continued to study and attempt to relive tooth pain, but dentistry was not its own profession until mid 1600 AD.
Continuing Advancements
Between 1650 and 1800 AD, the science of dentistry as we know it today was developed. The first dental textbook written in English appeared 1685, and in the years that followed many more treatments and theories were put forth. In 1723, French physician Pierre Fauchard, known as “the father of dentistry,” made amazing advancements in dental fillings, dentures, and preventative treatments. In 1840, the first dental school was founded, and preventative, general dentistry was discovered to greatly reduce problems within the mouth.
Modern Dentistry
Advancements in dental technology have made modern dental procedures quick, and often painless. Similarly, advances in analgesics has allowed for modern dentists to provide a safe, comfortable environment for their customers. What’s more, with a greater understanding of teeth, modern dentists are able to provide a range of services that can restore both beauty and functionality to teeth. New developments are made yearly, and the doctors at Chesterfield Valley Dental Group make sure they keep up with the latest advancements, to provide our customers with the safest, fastest, and most enjoyable experience possible.
