Endodontics – Root Canal
Chesterfield and St. Louis, Missouri
Endodontic treatment, or the root canal procedure, is a very successful tool dentists use to restore a tooth with a root infection. If you have a tooth that is severely affected by decay, a root canal may be your only way to avoid extraction. At Chesterfield Valley Dental Group, our Missouri family dentists have many years of experience performing root canal procedures that turn a once weakened, threatened tooth into a functional, strong one.
We offer state-of-the-art technology for performing root canals at the highest levels. In fact, Chesterfield family dentists Dr. Robert Goldman and Dr. Jeffrey Yenzer use the same equipment and technology as endodontic specialists.
During a thorough examination, we may find that your dental pulp, the nerve tissue inside the root canal, has become infected due to the presence of bacteria or injury to the tooth. If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, pain, tenderness, tooth discoloration, swollen gums, or you notice an abscess, you may be in need of a root canal procedure.
The Root Canal Process
If a root canal is recommended to save your tooth, you should expect to undergo the following process on your procedure day:
- We use anesthesia to help you remain comfortable and relaxed during the treatment. An X-ray of the tooth is taken if needed.
- Dr. Goldman or Dr. Yenzer will go into the infected tooth root and gently remove the pulp. The interior of the root canal is cleaned and reshaped.
- Once the tooth is completely dried, the root canal is filled with a material called gutta percha to help reinforce the tooth and seal the empty spaces. Your tooth will then be filled using our specially shaded tooth-colored fillings.
- During your next appointment, Dr. Goldman or Dr. Yenzer will add a dental crown to "cap" the tooth for maximum strength.
